Con Whelan

Meet Con – Host of "Country Classics"

Con’s deep love for traditional country music led him to create his radio show, "Country Classics," in 2016. What sets this program apart is its commitment to featuring local Tasmanian country artists, giving them a rare platform in the world of radio. These talented musicians, who are often overlooked by mainstream media, find a home on "Country Classics," alongside a rich selection of international country favorites.

As a country music singer and songwriter himself, with two CDs released to date, Con brings a genuine passion and insider’s knowledge to his program. His career in music and his love for the old-style country genre have shaped both his radio show and his personal journey as an artist. He connects deeply with listeners who appreciate the timeless beauty of country music, from Bush Ballads to Yodelling.

Country Classics airs every Thursday from 3pm to 6pm and takes listeners through a diverse collection of country music traditions, featuring not only Tasmanian artists but also iconic sounds from American, Irish, Australian, and New Zealand country music. Con's show creates a nostalgic and heartwarming atmosphere that celebrates country music’s roots and heritage.

A highlight of each show is the Special Artist Segment at 4:30pm, where Con dives deeper into the career of a selected artist. During this feature, he plays four tracks from the artist and shares interesting facts, offering listeners a deeper appreciation for their music and background.

Con’s dedication to the genre and his support of local talent have made "Country Classics" a beloved staple on Tasman FM, a must-listen for fans of traditional country music.
